Seven directors of a fighting fund donated by the public to help Kate and Gerry McCann publicise the search for missing Madeleine were due to vote today on whether some of the money could be used to pay for the McCanns’ legal defence, should they be charged with manslaughter.

The fund is registered as a private company and not a charity which means there is little to stop the McCanns using it as they wish. The directors are all family and friends.

According to findmadeleine.com, donations of £1,036,104 have been received to date. One of the objectives of the fund states it can be used “to provide support, including financial assistance, to Madeleine’s family”.

However, amid signs of a public backlash, Gerry’s brother John McCann, said he thought its use for a legal defence may be blocked because of “public perception of events in Portugal”.

Meanwhile, friends of the McCanns say they want to make their own forensic tests on their hire car, which is still being rented. Police claimed clumps of Madeleine’s hair were found in the boot of the silver Renault hired by the couple 25 days after Madeleine disappeared.

In a separate development, Portuguese press reports that two English sniffer dogs traced a ‘smell of death’ from the Ocean Club resort – from where the girl vanished – to the Nossa Senhora da Luz church. The McCanns were given the keys to the church, which is two minutes walk from their holiday flat, to use as a private sanctuary from day one.

Wilder speculation in Portugal today questions whether Gerry McCann is the biological parent of Madeleine: there are also claims the McCanns knew Robert Murat, who remains the only other suspect in the case.

A Portuguese judge is expected to decide within ten days whether charges will be brought against the couple after a 4,000-word dossier was received from the Policia Judiciaria.
